”It almost looks like it’s flying”, I thought to myself, while rubbing my arms to keep the temperature up.
I was sitting on a bench in the park, waiting for Eddie to get tired of eating old flowers, or whatever he was doing. Where do puppies get all their stamina and endless energy from? I looked up at the big maple tree in front of me, searching for the leaf that had got caught by the wind. When I spotted the leaf it was still gliding through the air, but it did not seem to fly anymore. Slowly it sank down to earth.
Eddie was now happily rolling in the grass. I checked my cell phone, no calls, no messages, and on top of that I had only been out for about ten minutes. I sighed deeply and thought of how much I’d appreciate a nice warm cup of coffee right now. I looked back at the leaf, still lying on the same spot as before. For a moment I thought it looked sad, lying there dead and old, staring up at the magnificent tree above it filled with colour and life.
“That must have been the reason why it tried to fly away”, I thought. “Who would like to be stuck in a place where you clearly do not belong?”
Eddie was now chasing his tale in a wild game only he could understand.
“The leaf probably understood that if it left the tree, it would fall to the ground. Still it left the tree, just for one flight. Leaving the shit behind and fly away…” I was completely unconscious of the fact that I now was speaking loudly to myself and people were starting to take detours around me. I shook my head. “How crazy, thinking that a leaf would have emotions. But still…”
I took a deep breath, and got up from the bench.
“I’m sorry Eddie, but there’s something I’ve got to do,” I said to the little dog, now running in the bushes on the other side of the park. I turned around and started to walk down the street, softly singing to myself:
“In a crooked little town, they were lost and never found, fallen leaves, fallen leaves, fallen leaves on the ground…”
